Worsening food insecurity to hit Ghana following destruction to farmland by Bagre Dam spillage – Kareweh
The former General Secretary of the General Agriculture Workers Union (GAWU) Edward Kariweh has hinted of a worsening food insecurity in the country following the destruction to farmland by spillage of the Bagre Dam.
The livelihoods of farmers in the northern part of the country are under threat as the spillage from the Bagre Dam submerged their farms after weeks of drought causing them to prematurely harvesting.
Mr Kareweh in an interview with Starr News noted that Ghana is not doing well when it comes to food production around this time, a situation that reflects what is on the market.
“When you go to the market to buy foodstuff, you hardly find them and when you get them their prices are too high. So, what it means is that it is going to exacerbate the already difficult situation that we have. It is not just about shortage of food, or food insecurity, it is about the target group. These are vulnerable people, who are already living below the poverty. In fact, these are people whose livelihood for the whole year depends on two, three of four acres of their crops. So, if anything happens to it, then it becomes more like a starving situation for them.
“So as for food security, we know that we don’t have food security in this country. We have been struggling to increase our security, but unfortunately the situation as it stands now is going to be exacerbated,” Edwrad Karieweh stated.
