Minister of Communication orders shutting down of seven radio stations

Samuel Nartey George, the Minister of Communication, Digital Technology, and Innovations, has issued an order to shut down seven radio stations nationwide.

The stations that are impacted are Okyeame Radio Limited in Bibiani, Fire Group of Companies in Sunyani (which operates on 90.1 MHz), and Gumah FM in Bawku.

The minister said that the decision was made owing to national security concerns and in compliance with the nation’s broadcasting laws when he posted this update on his X page on Tuesday, January 17, 2025.

“Today, in two separate cases, I have directed the NCA Ghana to suspend and enforce a prohibition of broadcast on a total of seven (7) radio stations.

“In one instance, the decision was based on national security grounds, while in six other cases, it was due to broadcasting without a valid frequency authorization following a recent frequency audit. Enforcement of this directive is immediate, and further action will be taken in the coming days,” he noted.

Nartey, Sam George also reiterated his determination to make sure that all media outlets abide by the nation’s media laws.

“I reiterate my commitment to sanitizing our airwaves and ensuring strict adherence to the law regarding frequency authorizations. I urge all media houses to ensure they are complying with ALL the terms of their frequency authorizations,” he stated.
