Unemployed Nurses and midwives express mixed reactions over govt’s announcement of 15, 200 recruitment slots

Mixed reaction has welcomed the government’s announcement that 15,200 nurses and midwives are to be recruited and posted to the various hospitals across the country.

Whereas some nurses and midwives have been staying home unemployed for years after completing training, others are sad because they will still remain home jobless.

The Ministry of Health (MoH) has announced the recruitment of 15,200 nurses and midwives, effective Monday, August 5, 2024.

In a statement released on Friday, July 26, 2024, the MoH confirmed that the Ministry of Finance (MoF) has granted the necessary financial clearance for the recruitment process.

Interested and qualified candidates are expected to apply through the MoH’s online application portal, where they can select their preferred agency under the Ministry. The application period will close on Friday, August 23, 2024.

The Ministry has emphasized that the recruitment process is free, and applicants are warned not to pay any fees to individuals or entities claiming to facilitate the process.

However, an executive of the unemployed nurses and midwives group who spoke on condition of anonymity to New York based Adinkra Radio Morning show host, Daakyehene Ofosu Agyemang, said her checks have revealed that only the 2020 graduating batch of nurses and midwives qualify to be recruited.

“When we heard the announcement, we sought further explanation because there was no indication of which batch of graduate nurses and midwives were to be recruited. So I reached out to the Ministry of Health PRO on the phone, who disclosed to me that it is only those of us who completed in 2020 who qualify to be recruited. As it stands now, those who completed after 2020 cannot access the portal to go through the recruitment process.

“So we are excited that the Minister of Health Dr. Oko Boye has fulfilled his promise to get us jobs. He promised to ensure that the huge backlog of trained nurses and midwives staying at home will be employed. So, much as we are excited over the good news, not all of us unemployed are happy because this is for only those of us who completed training in 2020. Those who completed in 2021 and 2022 were part of our struggles [demonstrations] to get us employed, but as they will have to continue staying home and bid their time, they are not excited by the latest announcement. We were three batches that demanded our postings, so we’ll continue to fight until the two other batches are also employed. But we are hopeful that very soon, the government will employ them as well.”
