Tema-Mpakadan accident: Repair works on damaged train valued at over $2m – Prosecution to Court

The prosecution in the case involving the accident of a recently acquired train on the Tema-Mpakadan rail lines has informed the court that the train’s damage is estimated to be worth $2,138,466.86.

This comes after the train’s manufacturers performed an inspection on it.

The Juapong Circuit Court sentenced 41-year-old truck driver Abel Dzidotor to six months in jail for abandoning his car on the Tema-Mpakadan rail lines, which resulted in the train accident.

This came about following his guilty pleas to three of the four accusations, which included inflicting harm, stopping without permission, and driving carelessly and inconsiderately.

Using his own plea, he was found guilty.

Brief facts

The complaint’s prosecutor, Detective Chief Inspector Abel Anane, stated that the complainants, Kwabena Bonsu and Engineer Dr. Divine Olitey, are both Tema-based consultants for the Ghana Railways Authority.

According to their report, Dzidotor Abel, a 41-year-old man, was the driver responsible for a Hyundai truck bearing the license plate GS 9018-20.

According to the Prosecutor, the complainants and their Polish counterparts started a site acceptance test of the new Diesel Multiple Unit (DMU) 001 from Tema to Mpakadan on Thursday, April 18, 2024, between 0900 and 1300 hours.

He testified in court that the train was being tested when it came to Abortia, a Juapong suburb, and collided with the previously described unmanned truck that had become stranded across the railroad tracks in an unauthorized place.

According to him, the accused left the truck parked carelessly near other drivers.

According to Detective Abel, the train only moderately experienced damage, but the truck sustained irreversible damage.

According to the prosecution, the driver in question fled to Tagadzi, where he was apprehended and charged with a crime.
