Tema Central, Ahafo Ano North, declared for NPP
The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has emerged victorious in the Tema Central and Ahafo Ano North constituencies following a re-collation of election results conducted on December 21, 2024, at the Greater Accra Regional office of the Electoral Commission (EC).
Tema Central Re-Collation
In Tema Central, an earlier result that declared the National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate, Ebi Bright, as the winner has been overturned after the re-collation exercise. NPP’s candidate, Charles Forson, was officially declared the winner after securing 18,870 votes.
This marks a narrow victory over Ebi Bright, who garnered 18,815 votes. The re-collation process, which was conducted under heightened security and close monitoring by representatives of both parties, followed legal challenges over discrepancies in the initial count.
Ahafo Ano North Re-Collation
Similarly, in Ahafo Ano North, Agyeman Prempeh of the NPP was announced the winner, polling 20,353 votes, just edging out Kwasi Adusei of the NDC, who secured 20,232 votes.
The re-collation of results in this constituency followed similar issues of irregularities raised by candidates during the initial collation.
The confirmation of Prempeh’s victory came after a thorough review and careful examination of the results by the EC, amid growing tension and scrutiny from political stakeholders.
Election Disputes and Court Orders
Both re-collations were part of a broader judicial review process, following an order by the High Court on December 20, 2024, which instructed the EC to re-collate and announce the results for several contested constituencies, including Tema Central and Ahafo Ano North.
The court’s directive followed complaints raised by candidates of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), who highlighted irregularities in the initial election results and sought a review to ensure transparency.
The electoral process in these constituencies had been fraught with tension, with disputes over the collation process and claims of electoral malpractice.
Political parties, including the NPP and NDC, both sought to influence the outcome through legal challenges, while security forces were deployed to maintain order during the re-collation exercises.
Victory Speeches and Reactions
After the re-collation results were announced, Charles Forson of the NPP expressed his gratitude to the people of Tema Central, thanking them for their trust and support throughout the electoral process. Forson vowed to continue advocating for the development of the constituency and promised to push for policies that address the concerns of his constituents.
Similarly, Agyeman Prempeh in Ahafo Ano North thanked his supporters for their unwavering confidence and vowed to work towards improving the livelihoods of the people in the region, focusing on infrastructural development and job creation.
Impact on the Political Landscape
These victories are significant for the NPP as they add to their growing list of successes in the post-election re-collation process.
The re-collation exercise has raised important questions about the integrity of the election process and the role of the Electoral Commission in ensuring free and fair elections. The ongoing disputes in several constituencies highlight the contentious nature of the 2024 elections, with both the NPP and NDC continuing to challenge results in key battleground areas.
