NIA to register minors aged 6-14 for the Ghana Card starting October 7, 2024
The National Identification Authority (NIA) is set to begin registering minors aged 6-14 for the Ghana Card starting October 7, 2024.
This initiative is part of the government’s ongoing efforts to ensure every citizen is included in the national identification system.
The NIA has already registered citizens above 15 years and those between 0 and 5 years.
Speaking in an interview on New York-based Adinkra Radio, the Executive Secretary of the National Identification Authority, Prof. Ken Attafuah, said this current phase targets minors in schools across selected districts, providing easy access for eligible children.
He said by targeting schools, the NIA aims to make the registration process convenient for parents and guardians. This strategic move, he added, will also help streamline the process, ensuring that all eligible children are registered.
“We are now set to register children from 6 to 14 years who were not registered during the mass registration exercise. We have tested the system for their registration at our head office in Accra and that of the National Health Insurance Authority, and we’re certain that we can roll out the registration of children. So from October 7, the Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, will launch the program so we can start registering children in that age bracket,” he said in the interview with Host, MC Ogee.
He added: After that, we’ll turn our attention to children who are less than age 5. That as well, Dr. Bawumia launched a program for their registration. That is being done on a pilot basis, so we can close the loop. Now, those who are left to be registered are those in detention and those who are detained in the psychiatric hospital who are Ghanaians as well. The law says we should register all Ghanaians in Ghana and outside Ghana. So, we will attend to this group of persons in the coming week.”
Prof. Ken Attafuah emphasized that incorporating children into the national database is crucial for achieving comprehensive identification for all Ghanaians.
The Ghana Card provides citizens with a unique identification number, making it easier to access essential services such as healthcare, education, and communication.
It also serves as proof of citizenship and identity.
To register, citizens are required to provide any of the following identity documents: SSNIT ID Card, Tax Identification Number, Driver’s License, Voter ID Card, and NHIS Card.
