NDC suspends Central Regional Chairman Prof. Richard Asiedu

The Functional Executive Committee (FEC) of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has suspended its Central Regional Chairman, Prof. Richard Asiedu, over the withdrawal of Nurudeen Shaibu Migyimah as the party’s Assin Central Parliamentary Candidate.

Last week, the Central Regional branch of the NDC announced the withdrawal of the Assin Central Parliamentary candidate for the 2024 election and referred his alleged immoral conduct to the Regional Disciplinary Committee for further action.

However, following a meeting held on Tuesday, July 2, 2024, the FEC considered the letter from the Regional Secretary purporting to withdraw the party’s candidate, reversed the decision taken by the regional branch, and consequently took punitive action against the Regional Chairman and Secretary.

“The Functional Executive Committee of the NDC carefully examined the facts and circumstances surrounding the alleged withdrawal of the Parliamentary Candidate’s participation in the upcoming elections, in the presence of the Regional Chairman, the Regional Secretary, the Regional Organizer, and other party officers from the Central Region, and took the following decisions:

“The Regional Chairman, Prof. Richard Asiedu, is hereby suspended as Regional Chairman for one month effective immediately and is referred to the national Disciplinary Committee of the party on a charge of anti-party conduct.

“The Constituency Secretary of the Assin Central Constituency, Sadique Broni, is hereby suspended for one month and referred to the national Disciplinary Committee on the charge of anti-party conduct,” a statement signed by General Secretary of the NDC, Fifi Fiavi Kwettey said.

It added: “The letter originating from the Secretariat of the Central Region NDC purporting to withdraw the candidacy of the said Assin Central candidate, Comrade Migyimah, and further suspending his membership of the party, is null and void, and stands withdrawn. Accordingly, Comrade Migyimah remains the NDC Parliamentary Candidate of Assin Central for the upcoming general elections in December 2024.”
