NDC supporters storm EC office demanding Ablekuma North results
Some supporters of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) have besieged the Accra Regional Office of the Electoral Commission (EC), blocking roads with an electricity pole.
The demonstration was triggered by the police’s refusal to allow them entry into the EC office, where the collation of ballots for the fiercely contested Ablekuma North Constituency is ongoing.
The protesters demanded access to the premises, seeking the declaration of the results of the hotly contested race.
Police quickly intervened, forcing the demonstrators to remove the roadblock and restore order. The NDC supporters gathered outside the office, frustrated by the delay in the collation process, which has been prolonged due to disputes over the results. Both the NDC and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) are claiming victory in the constituency.
As of the previous day, the two parties had consolidated results from 219 pink sheets, leaving 61 still outstanding. The EC has reportedly relied on the pink sheets from both parties to complete the tally after some official sheets went missing.
The delay in finalizing the results has only increased tensions, with both parties accusing each other of irregularities.
To maintain order, a heavy police presence has been stationed at the regional collation centre. The Electoral Commission has not yet confirmed when the final results will be announced, fueling further uncertainty and unrest among the protesters.
