IGP apologizes to family of lady found dead in a pool at Takoradi

The Inspector-General of Police, Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, has reached out to the family of a 24-year-old woman who died in a swimming pool in Takoradi. He made a telephone call and rendered an unqualified apology for the lack of sufficient Police engagement.

This follows the dissatisfaction expressed by the deceased’s family in sections of the media regarding the extent of Police engagement with them on the matter.

A statement signed by ACP Grace Ansah-Akrofi, Director of Public Affairs of the Police Service, disclosed that the IGP “assured them that investigation into the incident is still ongoing and also informed them of the readiness of the Police to visit them at their convenience and update them on the investigation done so far.”

“Police will continue to work closely with the family as the investigation into the incident continues,” it added.

The statement explained that on 8th June 2024, the Ghana Police Service received a complaint to the effect that Lois Abena Korateng, a 24-year-old woman, had been found unconscious in a swimming pool at a hotel in Takoradi in the Western Region. She was taken to the hospital for medical attention but was pronounced dead on arrival.

It said on the same day, Police commenced an investigation into the incident. A Police team visited the scene, the hospital, and inspected the body, but no marks of assault were found on her.

The body was later deposited at the morgue, where an autopsy was conducted on 8th June 2024, in the presence of the deceased’s family by a pathologist at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital. The verbal cause of death was given as (i) ASPHYXIA, (ii) SEVERE PULMONARY EDEMA, and (iii) DROWNING IN A POOL.

Lois, a 24-year-old Petroleum Engineering graduate of KNUST, is said to have checked into a hotel at Anaji in Sekondi-Takoradi in the Western Region, accompanied by her boss and the company driver.

However, at dawn the next day, she was found dead and afloat in the hotel’s swimming pool, with no visible signs of injuries.

The family is convinced the young lady was murdered and wants her death to be probed.
