‘I cannot promise a new stadium under the current crisis’ – John Mahama

John Dramani Mahama, the National Democratic Congress flagbearer and former president of Ghana, has told reporters that given the current economic climate, he cannot guarantee the construction of a new stadium because Ghana’s sports infrastructure is still in poor condition.

Ghana is now unable to claim a world-class category A stadium since the Confederation of African Football frequently has to make concessions in order to let its football teams play continental matches at home.

During an engagement with the media on Sunday, Mahama was questioned about his plans for handling that issue should he be elected in December’s general elections.

“In the current crisis in which we are, I would not stand here and promise that we will build a new stadium,” he said.

“But I’ve said that under the big push, we intend to spend a certain amount of money over five years on providing a good infrastructure to include roads, bridges, agro-industrial parks, and so on and so forth.

“That could include sports facilities. And if we make allocation, then we probably would look at providing such a stadium,” he concluded.

The only two venues that are currently in good enough condition to conduct significant multi-sport tournaments are the University of Ghana Stadium and the Borteyman Sports Complex, both of which were constructed for the 2023 African Games.
