Gov’t withdraws L.I on MPs use of sirens, speed limit exemptions
The Ministry of Transportation has officially withdrawn the controversial Legislative Instrument (L.I.) which sought to grant Members of Parliament the privilege of using sirens and exempt them from speed limits while performing their official duties.
The withdrawal was done on behalf of the Minister for Transport by the Minister of State at the Local Government Ministry Martin Adjei-Mensah Korsah on Tuesday, July 16, 2024.
The proposed amendment to the Road Traffic Regulations, 2012 (LI 2180) has been met with public backlash and opposition from a section of the public who have roundly condemned the move.
Critics feared the lawmakers would abuse the privilege.
Hon. Martin Adjei Mensah Korsah in a formal statement on the floor of Parliament withdrew the L.I pointing to the public disapproval against the move.
“Mr Speaker, I rise to move that the Road Traffic Regulation Amendment 2024, which was laid on Friday, June 14, 2024, be withdrawn. Mr. Speaker, this has become necessary based on extensive engagement with leadership. Therefore, it is so withdrawn,” he stated.
