Focus on reducing cost of fuel, not extension of license renewal term – Concerned Drivers Assoc.

The Concerned Drivers Association has rejected Flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party(NPP) Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s promise to extend the renewal period of drivers license from two years to 8 or 10 years.

The Vice President is advocating for extensive changes in the way driver’s license are renewed.

Dr. Bawumia believes the current system is an inconvenience for drivers and should be extended.

Addressing chiefs and other stakeholders at Boadua in the Akwatia Constituency of the Eastern Region, Dr. Bawumia said, “Drivers are here. Today, the driver’s licence expires every two years. Let us extend it, be it 8 years or 10 years.

Let us make sure you can have a driver’s licence without having to renew it every year. It does not make sense, and so by the grace of God we would make changes.”

But the Chairman of the Concerned Drivers Association, Paa Willie in an interview with New York-based Adinkra Radio Morning Show Host, Daakyehene Ofosu Agyeman stated that what is important to drivers is the government reducing the price of fuel and not issues relating to drivers license.

We are not bothered with the duration of drivers license. What it important to us is for the government to reduce the cost of fuel. That will rather make us happy.”

The drivers accused Dr. Bawumia of failing to any of the promises he’s made to them.

“Four years ago, Dr Bawumia told the Okada riders that they should stop riding the motorbikes promising to give them cars which cost very low instead. It was 419, that promise was never fulfilled. On 5th July, we met with him at Kasoa during an election for GPRTU executives. At the event, the Vice President was informed that when drivers have our faulty cars parked for a year or more and we get it fixed, the DVLA charges us the drivers a penalty before they clear the vehicles as roadworthy. Dr. Bawumia said he had no idea this is what we go through. This is a person who has at his disposal both the Transport Minister and the DVLA boss for briefing, and yet he said he knows nothing about our issue. He promised to look into our issue and have it addressed. But as I speak, we have not heard a word from him.

“So if such a person promises to extend the license renewal years, why should we believe him. This same man told us that the government has imported electric cars and by end of July it will be distributed to the various transport unions, GPRTU was promised 100, we are in August but that promise also is yet to be fulfilled. We will not vote for Bawumia today or tomorrow.”
