Election 2024: Avoid partisan politics, be neutral and professional – Army warned

The Chief of Army Staff, Major General Bismarck Kwasi Onwona, has issued a stern warning to the army, urging them not to succumb to any form of influence from politicians or other stakeholders in the upcoming December elections.
He emphasized the importance of avoiding partisan politics and remaining focused on their professional duties.

Speaking on the need to maintain peace during the election period, Major General Onwona reiterated the army’s commitment to professionalism and called on military personnel to stay dedicated to their responsibilities.

He also reassured Ghanaians that the army is fully prepared to ensure a peaceful and orderly electoral process.

In addition, Major General Onwona appealed to the media to exercise caution, urging them to avoid the spread of misinformation and disinformation as the elections approach, warning that such actions could endanger the country’s peace.

He made these remarks during the commissioning of a new accommodation facility for officers at the Central Command in Kumasi.

The facility was constructed under the supervision of Brigadier General Michael Kwadwo Opoku, the General Officer Commanding the Central Command.

“I am not singling out any group of people. What I mean is that they should not allow themselves to be influenced by anybody; their politicians, members of the media fraternity, or people in the business community.

“We are not politicians, our role is to defend the Constitution. So, I am referring to everybody and anybody who has the intention of influencing any member of the armed forces negatively,” he stated.

“We will perform our duties professionally. We will be impartial and neutral. We have always emphasised the need for members of the armed forces to stay out of partisan politics. We are aware everybody will go and vote and everybody has an opinion, but that is where it needs. you go and cast your ballot after that you perform your duties professionally,” he added.
