#DumsorMustStop demo comes off today

Thousands of Ghanaians are expected to hit the streets as the #DumsorMustStop demonstration comes off today, Saturday June 8, 2024.

They will express their displeasure over the erratic power situation in the country.

The demonstration had been scheduled for Saturday, May 25 but the organizers rescheduled it following an impasse with the police over the venue and the time for the event.

Demonstrators will now convene at the frontage of the University of Ghana main entrance at 2:00pm where protesters will later march to the Tetteh Quarshie roundabout in the evening.

“At the Tetteh Quarshie roundabout the protesters will be giving speeches to drum home the need for the government to fix the dumsor crisis. The event will commence at 2:00pm and end at 10:00pm at the Tetteh Quarshie roundabout. We urge all Ghanaians who are devastated by the dumsor crisis to come out and express their displeasure to the government. We need to tell the government right in the face that we are not happy with the erratic power situation in the country,” Selorm Dramani Dzramado said in an interview.

Actress Yvonne Nelson, who previously organized a similar protest in 2015, contends that the intermittent power cuts, locally known as ‘dumsor,’ are adversely affecting her business.

She and her team have met with the Ghana Police Service to notify them of the intended protest.

But, the police opposed the proposed protest route after a meeting, particularly the planned endpoint at Revolution Square.

The police argue that its proximity to Jubilee House, a designated security zone and the time the protest was to end around midnight.
