Bawumia vows to assist farmers enhance production by providing tractors

Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the governing New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) flagbearer, has promised to provide tractors and finance to Ghanaian farmers in order to increase output and lower food prices.

During a campaign event in Wa East, Dr. Bawumia recognized the critical role farming plays in maintaining food security and affordability.

He highlighted that farming is the key to lowering food prices and promised to equip farmers with the resources they need to enhance yields.

Dr. Bawumia used the examples of Brazil and China, where farmers produce 10 and 12 tons of maize per acre, respectively, as opposed to Ghana’s average production of four tons per acre.

To remedy this discrepancy, Dr. Bawumia promised to bring innovative farming practices from Brazil and China to Ghanaian farmers.

He also announced intentions to create “super aggregators” that would buy goods directly from farmers, ensuring fair prices and lowering post-harvest losses.

He also emphasized the significance of employing lime fertilizers to boost soil fertility, citing Ghana’s abundant lime resources.

“I want to support our farmers. Farming is critical to lowering food prices, and we intend to assist farmers in increasing their output. An acre of land in Brazil may yield 10 tons of maize, while 12 tons can be obtained in China, but only four tons are produced in Ghana.

“I’m going to apply the practices that we are seeing that have worked in Brazil and in China to our farmers in the Wa East District, to increase productivity.”

“We are going to establish super aggregators who will come and buy the produce from the farmers so that the food does not go to waste and they can get good prices for their goods.

“We are going to help the farmers with tractors and with credit for them to harvest and we are going to move from the normal fertiliser to lime, lime makes our soil very fertile, and we have lime in Ghana and we are going to help our farmers use lime in Ghana.”
