Bawumia pledges to pay living allowances to chieftaincy institution

Vice President and Flagbearer of the governing New Patriotic Party(NPP) Dr. Mahamudu Bawwumia has pledged to pay living allowance to the Chieftaincy institution.

According to him, the Chieftaincy institution must be financially resourced to help decentralize government projects.

Addressing the Greater Accra Regional House of Chiefs as part of his tour of the Greater Accra Region, Dr. Bawumia expressed confidence that the Chieftaincy institution will be empowered to take decisions that will help government if they adequately resourced.

“To be able to get the Chieftaincy institution to really play its proper role, financially the institution has to be resourced. Because you can’t give them responsibilities without resourcing them. So the recommendation that has come and we will put it in the manifesto is to make sure we pay living allowance to the chieftaincy institution.

“By this, I mean the paramount chiefs currently it’s 1,000 cedis a month. Even to attend a meeting it may not be enough for petrol. There is no payment for the queenmothers, there is no payment for Divisional chiefs and so we need to pay living allowances to the Paramount chiefs, to the Divisional chiefs and also to the Queenmothers. If we do that then you will see that the chieftaincy institution will be empowered to take decisions that help the government.”
