Attorney-General directs Police to investigate alleged case of child marriage

The Office of the Attorney General and Ministry of Justice has directed the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service to commence investigation into the alleged traditional marriage between the Gborbu Wulomo and the 12-year-old girl.

In a statement signed and issued by the Deputy Attorney General and Deputy Minister for Justice, Diana Asonaba Dapaah on behalf of the Attorney-General and Minister for Justice stated that “sections 14 and 15 of the Children’s Act 1988 states that a person shall not force a child to be a subject of a dowry transactions, betrothed or married.

The Attorney-General further urged the CID to conduct necessary investigation of the alleged child marriage to enable the office to do the needful.

“The allegations, if proven, constitute a criminal offence for which all persons involved must face prosecution. We would appreciate it if you could cause your outfit to conduct the necessary investigation of the alleged child marriage to enable our office to do the needful”, the statement said.
