Bawku conflict: IGP visits gunshot victims

The Inspector-General of Police, Mr Christian Tetteh Yohuno on Saturday, April 12, continued his working visit to Bawku.

The visit, among other things, is aimed at assessing the current security situation and restoring cooperation and good relations between the Police and the youth of the community.

This follows a violent confrontation on Thursday, April 10, between police and some youths in the Bawku enclave, which reportedly resulted in multiple fatalities and injuries. The private residence of the Member of Parliament for Bawku Central, Mahama Ayariga, was also allegedly set ablaze during the unrest.

On Saturday, the IGP and his team visited persons who had sustained gunshot injuries during a recent violent incident.

The victims expressed their deep appreciation for the visit and appealed to the IGP to do whatever he could to bring lasting peace to Bawku. The team also visited the Police Training School at Nangode, where they interacted with instructors and other officers at the school.

From Nangode, the IGP and his team then headed to Pusiga to continue engagements with officers and other stakeholders. The team also stopped at Kusasa and then at Garu to assess the extent of damage to property and interact with the officers and members of the community.

The IGP and his team on April 11, 2025 paid a courtesy call on the esteemed Overlord of Bawku, Zugraan Bawku Naba Asigri Abugrago Azoka II.

During the visit, the IGP expressed regret over the death of Fuseini Iddrisu and called for the support of the Overlord and his elders to resolve the impasse between the youth and the Police.

He assured the Overlord and the people of Bawku of the readiness of the Police to work hand in hand with the community to ensure peace and security at Bawku. He further called on all Police officers and other security personnel to be neutral at all times and work within their mandate as prescribed by law.

In addition, the team also engaged police personnel and personnel of the other security agencies at the District Police Headquarters, Bawku.

In a statement, the police assured that the IGP and his team will continue to engage and work with the chiefs, opinion leaders and the people of Bawku, as well as all other stakeholders, to ensure improved relations between the Police and the community and bring about lasting peace to Bawku and surrounding communities.
