Akufo-Addo celebrates free SHS success at Prempeh College’s 75th Anniversary

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has lauded the success of the Free Senior High School (Free SHS) policy, a cornerstone initiative of his administration, during the 75th anniversary celebration of Prempeh College in Kumasi.

In his address, President Akufo-Addo acknowledged the challenges faced, including global economic pressures and the COVID-19 pandemic, but emphasised his government’s determination to uphold the policy.

“Despite the setbacks, including the pandemic, we have sustained and successfully implemented the Free SHS policy,” he said.

“Our commitment to free secondary education for every Ghanaian student remains unwavering, and we will continue to push forward to ensure that every child has access to quality education.”

He further highlighted the government’s significant investment in education infrastructure, stating that no previous administration had matched the level of funding his government has directed towards improving educational facilities across the country.

The President reaffirmed the commitment to initiatives aimed at enhancing educational quality, benefiting both students and teachers.

The Free SHS programme, introduced in 2017, was designed to make secondary education accessible to all Ghanaian students.

Since its inception, the programme has provided access to secondary education for over 5.7 million students, making a substantial impact on the nation’s educational landscape.
