Election 2024: Ghana Card to be primary source for Passport applications – Bawumia
The flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has emphasized the need to simplify Ghana’s passport application process.
While campaigning in the Nkwanta North constituency, he announced that his government would streamline the procedure by utilizing Ghana Card data as the primary source for passport applications.
Dr. Bawumia is well-known for his role in advancing Ghana’s digitalization agenda, a focus he continues to champion despite criticisms that he has not adequately addressed pressing economic challenges.
He believes that digitalization is closely linked to Ghana’s broader development goals.
During his campaign visit to Nkwanta North in the Oti Region on Monday, October 28, Dr. Bawumia highlighted that digital innovations aim to improve the lives of Ghanaians, specifically noting that digitizing the passport application process could significantly reduce bureaucratic hurdles.
“We have realised that a lot of people are interested in acquiring passports but the process is tedious. I intend to simplify this process, I have realised that the information requested is on the Ghana Card.
“What we will then do is to make people submit their Ghana Card and pay the fees, it will be simple, you will not fill any forms from 2025.”
On a separate visit to the Akan constituency, one of the paramount chiefs expressed regret that the Oti Region did not strongly support the NPP in the last elections, despite the party’s role in creating the new region.
