13 dead in fatal accident on Kumasi-Obuasi Highway
Thirteen (13) people have tragically lost their lives in a fatal accident that occurred on Monday, October 14, 2024, when a VIP bus travelling from Kumasi to Enchi in the Western North Region veered off the road and plunged into a ditch near the town of Kwapia, close to Obuasi.
Citi News’ Hafiz Tijani reported that police confirmed 11 passengers died on the spot, with one additional passenger succumbing to injuries at the hospital.
The deceased included seven males, five females, and a child, all of whom were passengers on board the bus.
The driver, identified as Osei Adu, was rushed to the hospital for treatment but sadly passed away shortly after arriving due to the severity of his injuries.
Eyewitness accounts indicate that the bus, with registration number ER 2445-11, was overloaded after picking up several stranded passengers from another bus that had broken down along the route.
The bus reportedly lost control while navigating a sharp curve, causing it to skid off the road and into the ditch.
Emergency services, including police and fire personnel, were swiftly dispatched to the scene to rescue survivors and transport the injured to nearby hospitals.
However, the extent of the injuries for those who survived remains critical. Two police officers who were on the bus on escort duties have also sustained injuries and are currently receiving treatment
