Man arrested at Buduburam in an attempt to sell niece to acquire Canadian visa

A 30-year-old man, Nana Kofi Amofa, alias Kofi Yesu, has been arrested by the Central East Regional Police Intelligence Unit (PID) while attempting to sell his senior brother’s 6-year-old daughter for GHC150,000 to acquire a visa to Canada.

The suspect was apprehended on Tuesday, July 23, 2024, around 10:00 PM at Gomoa Buduburam near Obolo Estate.

Information gathered indicates that the police received a tip-off indicating the suspect’s desire to sell the six-year-old girl (name withheld) to fund his travel to Canada. Acting on this information, the police dispatched officers to lead to his arrest.

Sources indicate that officers from the Police Intelligence Unit contracted a man to pose as a buyer who expressed interest in purchasing the victim. During their conversation, the suspect demanded GHC150,000 (1.5 billion old cedis).

Following the arrest, the suspect confirmed that the victim is the daughter of his senior brother, Kwadwo Brako, who is currently in their hometown at Nyamebekyere, a village near Akyem Ayirebi in the Ofoase Ayirebi Constituency of the Eastern Region.

Upon interrogation, the suspect revealed that the girl was living with her parents at Nyamebekyere. He had asked her to come and stay with him under the pretense of providing her with better educational opportunities, not knowing he intended to sell the little girl to fund his travel to Canada.

Currently, the little girl and the suspect have been handed over to the Kasoa DOVVSU department for further investigations.
