Govt has paid only 3 months arrears – Nurse and Midwife Trainees Assoc.
The Ghana Nurse-Midwife Trainees Association(GNMTA) has dismissed reports that government has settled four months allowance arrears out of the 23 months owed them.
It follows a promise by the Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia that government will clear the arrears owed them.
He announced last week that GHC177 million was to be released by the Finance Ministry to the Health Ministry for onward disbursement to the students by Thursday 16th May, 2024.
But a week after the announcement, the government has paid three months out of the 23 months owed them.
The President of the Ghana Nurses-Midwife Trainees Association(GNMTA) Pascal Adumbisa in an interview with Starr News disclosed that only two batches of students have been paid.
“We acknowledge the payment but I just called the Ministry and they assured that they are working tirelessly and by next week, disbursement will be made. For now, we are holding a lot of discussions as national executives regarding payment of the allowance because we are not going to relent over the fact that three months are being paid to our members. Many months arrears are over due, over 30 months, others are having 27 months, others 15 months arrears and you pay them only three months. It’s not like we are not being appreciative but comparing the number of months that have been paid it is not up to a quarter of the months they are owing us.”
