Akufo-Addo forwards petition to remove Special Prosecutor to CJ

President Akufo-Addo has received a petition seeking the removal of Kissi Agyebeng as the Special Prosecutor and has forwarded it to Chief Justice Gertrude Torkonoo for action.

According to sources the petition dated 30th April 2024 was filed by Agyebeng’s predecessor, Martin Amidu who resigned from the role in the lead-up to the 2020 elections, barely three years after he was made the first special prosecutor.

While details remain sketchy on the premise of the call for Agyebeng’s removal, Martin Amidu has been vociferous in his disagreement with some of the OSP’s investigations and modus operandi accusing him in the past of being “inexperienced”, “corrupt, and desperate” and on many occasions asserted the office has resorted to “witch hunting” in its investigations and “abuse of the processes of the court”.

Kissi Agyebeng last November, openly expressed frustrations he faced in his quest to perform his mandated duty, accusing the courts of granting immunity to some individuals from criminal prosecution.

But Martin Amidu criticized the utterances of the SP, demanding his impeachment over what he describes as the SP’s “Crossing of The Redline By Scandalizing The Administration Of Justice And Must Be Impeached”.

The Office of the Special Prosecutor has over the past few weeks been caught up in a turf war between itself and the Economic and Organized Crimes Office (EOCO) and the Attorney-General’s Office on the status and way forward concerning money laundering allegations around the stealing of over $1 million in the home of former sanitation minister, Cecilia Dapaah.

Meanwhile, our source confirms the petition has since been equally forwarded to the Kissi Agyebeng to respond to the CJ to determine whether there is a prima facie against the SP.
