Bryan Acheampong’s comment is an attack on the 1992 constitution – Care Ghana Boss
Executive Director of Care for Free and Fair Elections Ghana (Care Ghana), David Kumi Addo, has described as unfortunate the comments made by Minister for Agriculture, Bryan Acheampong, at the NPP’s health walk in Kwahu.
The Abetifi MP is on record to have said that the New Patriotic Party will not hand over power to the National Democratic Congress in the upcoming general election.
“Last year I stood here in Mpraeso and said that whether NDC likes it or not they will never win the 2024 polls. If you don’t win an election, will power be handed over to you? We will not hand it over to them today or tomorrow.”, Hon Acheampong stated
Speaking in an interview with Daakyehene Ofosu Agyemang on Adinkra Radio in New York, Mr. Kumi Addo stated that the remarks made by such a prominent figure in government should not be taken lightly, as they put a stain on Ghana’s stellar performance globally as a democratic nation.
Mr. Kumi Addo emphasised that someone with a military background like the Abetifi MP should know better than to make such utterances. According to him, several individuals within the NPP have made similar comments, including President Akufo-Addo and it does not sit right.
He added that such comments constitute an attack on the 1992 constitution, which governs us all. He has therefore urged Ghanaians to chastise comments like those.
Meanwhile Care Ghana in a separate press release have called on Bryan Acheampong to retract his statement and apologise.
“The Minister’s statement stands in direct opposition to the democratic values and principles upon which Ghana was founded. His words betray a fundamental lack of respect for the will of the Ghanaian people and undermine the very essence of democratic governance”, parts of the statement read.
