61K persons without fingerprints captured in new voter register – EC

Some 61, 995 Ghanaians without fingerprints were captured in the just-ended voter registration exercise, the Electoral Commission (EC) has disclosed.

The EC said it was impossible for its scanners to capture the fingerprints of those persons due to the trauma.

“This was, however, not unexpected, and these applicants will be verified on election day using our facial recognition system,” the EC said at a press conference in Accra on Wednesday, 12 August 2020.

“At the end of the registration exercise, the number of persons who were registered without fingerprints amounted to 61,995.

“This represents 0.37% of the total number of persons registered,” EC boss Jean Mensa stated.

The Upper East Region had the highest number of this class of applicants, the EC said.

A total of 9,244 applicants were found to have traumatic fingers.

The region with the lowest number of trauma cases was the Ahafo Region, which had only 813 persons with traumatic fingers.

Meanwhile, a total number of 16,932,492 persons have been captured in the new register by the end of the exercise on Sunday, 9 August 2020.

The EC says the overall registration exercise was successful, as it was “inclusive, participatory, orderly and peaceful.”
