EC declares Elikplim Akurugu as newly elected MP for Dome Kwabenya

The Electoral Commission (EC) has officially declared Faustina Akurugu Elikplim, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Parliamentary Candidate, as the Member of Parliament (MP) for Dome Kwabenya.

This announcement follows intense disputes between the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the NDC over the election results in the constituency.

During an emergency meeting of the Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) held on Tuesday, December 31, EC Chairperson Jean Mensa announced the decision, confirming that the electoral process for Dome Kwabenya had concluded.

“Today, we are pleased to announce that the proceedings and collation at the Dome Kwabenya Constituency have come to a close. It has gone full circle, and we are convinced beyond any shadow of a doubt that the outcome reflects the will of the people as expressed at the polls,” Jean Mensa stated. She further emphasized the EC’s impartial role in the process, saying, “Ours is not to make anybody president or MP. Ours is to ensure that our outcome and processes guarantee that the people’s choice is upheld.”

After the re-collation of votes, Faustina Akurugu Elikplim emerged victorious with 50,967 votes, narrowly defeating the NPP’s Mike Oquaye Junior, who obtained 50,669 votes.

This declaration not only concludes the contentious battle for the Dome Kwabenya seat but also affirms the NDC’s victory in the constituency. As a result, the planned re-run at an outstanding polling station has been cancelled.

Faustina Akurugu Elikplim is now set to assume her role as MP, marking a significant moment in the political landscape of Dome Kwabenya.
