1,237 persons killed in road accidents from January to June 2024

The National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) has revealed that Ghana recorded a total of 1,237 deaths from road accidents from January to June 2024.

Available statistics show that 6,653 accident cases were reported in the same period as 6,931 cases recorded same period in 2023, representing a 4.01% decrease.

The number of vehicles involved stood at 11,283 as against 11,808 same period in 2023 representing a 4.45% decrease.

Persons who suffered injuries as a result of road accident stood at 7,561 compared to 7,857 the same period in 2023 representing 3.77% decrease.

Pedestrian Knockdowns recorded 1,219 cases compared to 1,212 same period in 2023.

Generally, except for Persons Killed which recorded an increase of 13%, there have been decreases in all other indicators from January to June 2024 when compared to the same period of 2023.

It must be emphasized that the Greater Accra Region recorded a significant drop in of fatalities of 11.7% compared to 2023. Ashanti Region, on the other hand, recorded a hike in deaths (131) resulting in 67.5% increase compared to same period in 2023.

Despite Greater Accra experiencing more than double (200%) the number of crashes recorded in the Eastern Region over the past six months, the Eastern Region still surpasses Greater Accra in terms of deaths. From the analyses, for every 100 crashes, Eastern Region
recorded 27 deaths as against 10 deaths for the Greater Accra Region.

A statement issued by the NRSA said “It is also worthy to note that although Private Vehicles are witnessing a decline in crash involvement over the past five months, more private vehicles than commercial vehicles are involved in crashes on our roads.

“It can, therefore, be concluded that the Ashanti, Eastern and Greater Accra regions are the critical regions when it comes to CIDs in Ghana. There is thus the need for NRSA, in collaboration with its stakeholders, to re-strategize efforts to improve the situation even as we approach the 2024 election season.”
